Every February and March, Adelaide transforms into the magic capital of the Southern Hemisphere. Adelaide Fringe — the largest open-access arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere — brings dozens of magicians, illusionists, mentalists and hypnotists to venues right across the city. If you love being baffled, there is no better time to be in Adelaide.

This guide explains what kinds of magic shows you will find at the Fringe, how to choose one, and how to book — so you can plan a magic-filled night out whatever the year.

Prefer magic you can see all year round? Adelaide Magic Theatre performs close-up magic every Saturday at The Lost Dice, 111 King William St — not just during Fringe.

When is Adelaide Fringe?

Adelaide Fringe runs for around four weeks every year, typically from mid-to-late February through to mid-to-late March. Magic is one of its most popular genres, with shows scheduled from early afternoon family matinees through to late-night adults-only performances. You can browse the full program and book tickets on the official Adelaide Fringe magic listings.

The types of magic shows you'll find

"Magic" at the Fringe covers a huge range of styles. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right show for your group:

Close-up magic

Intimate, interactive magic performed inches from your face — cards, coins and objects that defy explanation. Close-up shows are usually in small venues, which makes them feel personal and impossible. (This is what we do at Adelaide Magic Theatre.)

Stage illusion

Big-room spectacle: levitations, vanishes and grand illusions designed for larger audiences. Great if you want a theatrical, high-production night out.

Mentalism & mind-reading

Performers who appear to read thoughts, predict choices and influence decisions. Mentalism shows are often as thought-provoking as they are astonishing.

Comedy magic

Magic built around laughs as much as gasps. Perfect for a relaxed, fun night — and usually very crowd-interactive.

Hypnosis

Comedy hypnotists turn willing volunteers into the stars of the show. Rowdy, unpredictable and a festival favourite.

Family & kids' magic

Daytime, all-ages shows with wizards, storytelling and plenty of audience participation — ideal for younger magicians-in-training.

Adults-only magic

Late-night, 18+ shows that mix world-class magic with cheeky, grown-up comedy. Best left at home if the kids are in tow.

How to choose a magic show

  • Match the style to your group. Date night or a special occasion suits close-up; families want a daytime all-ages show; a big group after laughs will love comedy magic or hypnosis.
  • Check the venue size. Smaller rooms mean a more intimate, interactive experience.
  • Read the star ratings and reviews. Fringe shows are reviewed heavily — look for consistent 4 and 5-star write-ups.
  • Mind the age rating. Many evening shows are 15+ or 18+.
  • Book early. The best magic shows sell out, especially on weekends.

How to book Adelaide Fringe magic shows

All Fringe tickets are sold through the official Fringe website, adelaidefringe.com.au. You can filter by genre (magic), date, venue and price. Many performers also offer "preview" performances in the opening days at a lower price — a great way to see a great show for less.
